We have been talking for the past year and a half about the importance for beauty and makeup professionals to respect the health and hygiene of their customers.  Recent research published by Dr Elizabeth Brooks of Jefferson Medical College, clearly confirms that without proper hygiene standards in place at the beauty counter, customers risk infection -  everything from E-coli, conjunctivitis, herpes simplex and strep.  Saturday is the worst day for contaminated makeup testers and E-coli means serious hygiene issues.  "Whenever you see E-coli you should think 'E.coli equals faeces,' ..."That means someone went to the bathroom, didn't wash their hands and then stuck their fingers in that moisturizer" say Brooks. 

But, as we have been saying for the past 18 months, there are solutions - as a consumer take a small individual makeover kit with you (see below image) which we sell precisely for this reason and for use by the makeup artists and sales assistants at the makeup counters.  Take with you a good sanitizer gel for your hands too.  Sometimes, beauty counters do not have gel handy.  If the makeup artitst or beauty practitioner doesn't clean their hands infront of you with a antibacterial gel before they start work, stop and walk away - it's a sure sign that the rest of the trial will not be done in a way that ensures you are risk free from cross-contamination..  Ensure any product is decanted onto a clean tissue, a petri dish, palette and that a new clean brush or applicator is used.  If the counter staff take a brush from a makeup brush belt, ask them for a new brush - the makeup belts harbour germs and bacteria and are all too frequently forgotton in any cleaning process. Even if the makeup artist wipes the brush with a quick spritz of a cleaner, it will not be 100% sanitized - can you risk it?  What's lurking?  Do you know if the person it was used on before didn't have herpes, which as you know, once infected, is with you for life!  If you pick up disposable applicators from beauty counters - ensure they have been kept sealed or in an airtight container.  If the q-tips and disposable mascara wands have been sitting unprotected, they will be picking up bacteria and can you be sure someone hasn't picked one up with dirty hands to have a look and feel and the popped it back?  We all have responsibiity to  ensure the beauty and makeup industry is not only fun and creative but respectful of customers' health and hygiene.
